Main interfaces are completely galvanically isolated from BeagleBone micro-computer. Thus, its name - FURaday cape, remembering Faradays cage, BeagleBone Capes and fur of a beagle, which can lay calm even during strongest thunderstorm with such an isolation :)

This cape was designed to control servo amplifiers or VFD's for CNC machines, industrial lines and other automated devices with BeagleBone.

Compatible with machinekit project, but should work with other software systems too.

Main interfaces are completely galvanically isolated. Thus, its name - FURaday cape, remembering Faradays cage, BeagleBone Capes and fur of a beagle, which can lay calm even during strongest thunderstorm with such an isolation :)

Cape requires external DC power source, 11V..35V.

Sample machinekit configuration files with simplified HAL names will be added soon.

The cape was tested in harsh conditions:

  • TIG welding, when positive electrode is connected to machine frame and electrical ground
  • Controlling multiple iInverters as servo drivers, where EMC noise issues usually arrise

Functions tested successfully on BeagleBone Black and BeagleBone Green:

  • Servo closed loop control with 5V PWM outputs and 0..10V analog outputs for VFDs
  • 5V incremental digital encoders (index functionality not tested with machinekit yet)
  • Opto-isolated outputs
  • Digital I/O
  • Analog inputs / ADC

No stability problems observed during long testing periods.

Other features:

  • State-of-the art industrial grade digital input, output and fast signal isolator ICs
  • Real 5V encoder inputs
  • Ability to disconnect power for digital outputs separately - possible E-stop wiring position
  • Analog voltage outputs may have separate common signal (requires external 10..35V and 5V supply)
  • Field power common connectors for wiring convenience.
